Statement of the UP Diliman College of Science Executive Board on the unilateral abrogation of the UP-DND Accord
The UP Diliman College of Science strongly condemns the unilateral abrogation of the UP-DND Accord by the Department of Defense.
This decades-long agreement between UP and the DND was forged based on mutual trust and respect for the fundamental functions of each party in our society and has long preserved the academic freedom and basic civil rights of the UP community.
We question the timing, the motives, and the manner by which this unilateral decision was made by the DND. The University has always upheld the need for dialogue and negotiations and openness for consultation between parties and stakeholders in critical decisions such as this. We now live at a time where being critical is tantamount to a criminal act. Without the Accord, grave concerns emerge in the UP Diliman College of Science regarding the safety of our faculty, staff and students in their exercise of scientific duties and their academic freedom in general.
The UP Diliman College of Science continues to uphold and defend academic freedom as a foundation for doing science that is meaningful and useful for society. In order to identify problems of the society and propose novel solutions, our scientists need to freely challenge truths and practices, as well as question societal norms and traditions without fear of persecution from any sector of the community. This scientific freedom is fundamental to the truthful exploration of and discovery of scientific knowledge that is essential for the progress of our human society as a whole.
We enjoin everyone in the UP community, including our alumni, to stand for and defend academic freedom in our universities and to protect our most basic human rights, as enshrined in our Constitution.
